-- Marc Chagall
Gotta love the simplicity of that statement. Nothing more I can add to that but a hearty "Amen." I think many artists (and patrons) today should refer to this quote---often. And for the art enthusiast and art novie--this quote can take the guesswork out of what qualifies as art. Love it.

But then, "what clashes" is subjective. Which leaves us still with the question of what qualifies as art.
I do agree with the beauty of the simplicity of the statement. And the fact that Chagall, as a creator, ultimately compares his work to the Original Creator is fascinating. I didn't know that Chagall judged his work by this standard. Makes one believe it helped to make him feel good about his art.
This painting is a good example to go with this quote. Thanks again for an interesting look into art philosophy!
Agreed. But I do think it helps because to a certain degree the average person knows what clashes with nature. And, too, their is room in the quote for personal taste. I don't think it was a checklist but more of a guideline. The good thing about art, I think< is that it is so subjective and personal. Art that speaks to me may make others cringe and that's okay.
